Special Education Excellence for Underserved Students

Our Mission

SEE US provides no-cost, expert, special education advocacy to underserved students with special needs. SEE US students receive educational plans and support that allow them to succeed in school and beyond. SEE US is a model program that uses collaborative advocacy to affect significant disproportionality, which contributes to the school-to-prison pipeline.

Black students are identified 2.22 times higher with intellectual disabilities and 2.08 times higher with emotional disturbances than White students in the same 6-21 age range.

- USDE (2019)

Black students make up 50% of all students with disabilities in correctional facilities.

- Disability Rights & Education Defense Fund (2014)

Our Services

Certain SEE US clients require special education assessments to help determine academic needs and education progress. SEE US provides assessments and access to needed evaluations for appropriate identification and services.

Special education advocacy includes client observations, review of student records such as progress reports and evaluations, advocacy in school meetings, recommendation of assessments and evaluations, conferences with parents and providers, and more.

SEE US enrolled parents receive resources to support their continued advocacy of their child’s special education.  Some parents also receive parent education training, a case summary with key actions and next steps, or an education report.

SEE US SUCCESS STORY

Michael was 4-years old when he became a SEE US learner. A Black student with autism, Michael was not thriving at his new school. His mother felt the school didn’t know how to teach him. After connecting with SEE US, Michael received a classroom observation from an expert and a thorough records review, both of which informed an impactful Behavior Intervention Plan with unique strategies. Now, Michael is learning and thriving.

SEE US SUCCESS STORY

“I want to say thank you to Ms. Marcy and the SEE US team. The support and guidance provided to me and the school team for my son has helped put services in place for him to be successful in school. Finding an advocate can be costly, but the SEE US program support has been a tremendous help in lifting the financial burden.” - Angelique
